SHANNON
Spring 1999 - 9/11/2007
Shannon joined our family in the Spring of 1999. She was full of life and all the energy of a Labrador puppy. She grew into a wonderful dog and a best friend. Shannon was very fortunate to spend her entire life with our family, never having to endure the hardships of homelessness or life in a shelter. She enjoyed trips to the beach, the mountains and even flew on a plane from Pittsburgh , PA to Los Angeles , CA. Sadly, this past summer she developed a lick granuloma on her foot and was treated with Prednisone. We were unaware that she was pre-diabetic. This condition caused her to have a terrible reaction to the medication. She developed a severe, acute pancreatitis, full blown diabetes and Cushing's disease. Despite every possible effort and modern veterinary care her condition worsened. With very heavy hearts we made the most difficult and painful decision to end her suffering and ease her pain. Shannon passed on September 11, 2007 . We had nearly 9 wonderful years with this sweet, beautiful, wonderful dog. We love her and miss her tremendously.
In loving memory...
The Verdugo Family.

BONES
? to 11-25-05
Everyone who has visited us these past 2 years will have met Bones. She came to us in October ’03, terribly emaciated, with a thin coat, bad hips and breathing problems. She was estimated at 10 years old. We wanted to make sure that her remaining days would make up for the neglect she had suffered. We affectionately called her “Bones” because we could count every one in her skinny, old body. Over the months she gained more than 20lbs and her coat became lush and shiny. Her eyelashes grew back and she would flutter them at anyone who came by. With pain meds, an orthopedic bed and lots of loving, she blossomed into a wonderful dog that gave us great pleasure. She became our official greeter. Any new dog met Bones first and, if they got along with her, we knew that eventually they would fit in to our temporary pack. Of course, we should have called her “Lola” because whatever Lola wanted, Lola got! We enjoyed her quiet company and loved her very much. Sadly by Thanksgiving she could not longer support her weight, her hips had finally given out. Our kind vet came to our home and Bones died in the place where she spent most time – on her orthopedic bed surrounded by those who loved her. Rest in Peace, my love.

WRINKLES
? to 11-21-05
We called her Wrinkles because she didn't have many! Pulled from the 9th ward in New Orleans 5 weeks after Hurricane Katrina, she came to 2nd Chance for foster care. Wrinkles arrived with a host of problems - starving, with a cherry eye, injured foot and heartworm. For over 7 weeks we loved her and treated her for her various veterinary needs. On November 18th she received her second round of heartworm medication. This led to a brain embolism and severe neurological damage. A few days later we had to say goodbye to this lovable Shar-pei. Rest in peace sweet dog.

ROXANNE
Roxanne, our wiggly, sweet, 14 year old Doberman passed away October 28,
2005. Roxy was a unique personality who was constantly giving kisses and
shook the house WWF-style when she decided to give herself a scratch on the
back. She loved long walks on the beach, chasing her skateboarding friends
around the ramps, and playing with her buddy Brik. Roxy was the most
resilient dog we've ever known and was strong and playful to the very end.
We miss her terribly but know she is wrestling with her friends now in the
doggie heaven she used to dream about.
A donation to 2nd Chance Dog Rescue has been made in Roxanne's memory by Laurie and Dave Bergthold.

BRITTANY
10-1-89 to 9-9-03
When Brit was brought into my life and I was not even sure that I wanted her. For 3 years she followed me around...eating my furniture , the kids shoes, my kitchen cabneits.....Eventually she convinced me that she was not leaving...
When I got sick in 1993, Brit somehow sensed that something was wrong. She became my rock, my support and most importantly, my best friend. I recovered and with her help learned so very much about unconditional love and trust.
The years past . We went thru a move, deaths of family members, loss of friendships, financial ups and downs, good times and bad and thru it all Britty was the one constant in our lives. The years finally took her toll and Brit finally had to ask for one favor . It was indeed the hardest thing that we ever had to do. But I know that someday we will be together again. Until that day...our memories will have to be enough. - Ginny O'Leary

Alley
Alley came to 2nd Chance Dog Rescue under horrific circumstances. Alley
was born in a live trap with 8 of her siblings when a rescuer found
them. Alley was one of three who survived the first few months of their
lives. She was adopted from our group as a puppy. She was then returned
when she was 1 1/2 years old. The owners said that they could not control
her. It turned out that Alley had a brain infection and had to be euthanized.
She will be missed by everyone who knew her.

Mickey
2nd Chance West would like to acknowledge a substantial donation in
memory of Mickey, the much loved Cairn Terrier of Abby Chang from Valencia.
Mickey died recently at the age of 13 1/2 .

MEG
A generous donation has been made by Ginny O'Leary (North Hills Critter
Care in Allison Park, PA) in honor and memory of Meg, who, for 14 years,
was the much loved black lab and canine companion of Rosie Pinkus.

SUZI BUCKET
3/9/01 - 8/16/03
Suzi Bucket died August 16th at the age of 2 1/2 years. Born under
dreadful circumstances, she, her Mom and seven siblings were taken in
by 2nd Chance when the pups were just one day old. Momma dog, Lucy,
gave birth in a live trap set by the dog warden.
It was March in P.A. and the family struggled to survive in the cold
and snow until the dog warden returned the next day.The pups were chilled
and hungry, Lucy was badly malnourished and unable to produce milk.
After weeks of hearthbreak, only Lucy and three pups survived.
One of these was Suzi. Like the rest of her family, she was placed
in her new home , but bounced back several months later. For weeks she
lived with a modified bucket around her head to stop her licking at
her rear end. Long after the yeast and urinary infections had cleared,
and the contraption removed, she was still being called Bucket, or Buckie
for short. The name just stuck!
Our founder Jill, the one who cared for the family in the early weeks,
decided to keep her. Bucket became an important member of the family,
moving to California with them in the fall of 2002.
Bucket was a happy dog whose rear end wiggled so much she would almost
become u-shaped. She loved to swim, play fetch, be brushed and take
up more than her fair share of the marital bed!
She died suddenly, and unexpectedly, early on the morning of August
16th. She had seemed in good health until about 20 minutes before her
death, had eaten all of her breakfast as usual, and had been playing
hard and fast with the present pack of foster dogs. She was up-to-date
on her shots, on heartworm control and had recently received a clean
bill of health at her annual veterinary check-up. It must have been
a stroke or a massive heart attack. We have buried her with her favorite
ball, in the place where she loved to play fetch. I can see the raised
mound of freshly turned soil from our 2nd Chance office. I miss her
terribly. - - - - - Jill Parnham 8/23/03
